Best At-Home Firearm Training Drills
Karen Hunter shares some firearm training drills and practice ideas that can be fun and very beneficial when it comes to owning a firearm for self-defense. Accuracy is key and needs to be practiced. If you can’t hit your threat under stress, the firearm will serve you zero purpose. A gun is only an absolute equalizer in the hands of a trained shooter. A poor trigger press will definitely hurt your accuracy. The following drills are great for focusing on trigger press and ultimately playing a vital role for increased accuracy.

At the Ranch: Map Scouting for Turkey Hunt
As I’m getting ready for my turkey hunt down in Nebraska at the end of March, one of the important things I’m doing ahead of time is map scouting online. When it comes to map scouting, you definitely want to make sure you have the tools to help you as much as possible. What I like to use is OnX maps, which gives me the property boundaries for all public and private land. I’m easily able to identify these parcels, which helps me determine where I can hunt. Once you’ve figured that out, identify big chunks of public land, especially if you don’t have permission on any private land. Next, an important part is identifying access trails. If you can identify where these are, it’ll help you in determining where it’s likely other hunters will be, and then you can look at getting away from other hunters.
A feature you want to be looking for is small and secluded openings in the timber. Small openings such as fields or clear cuts can be great areas because these are types of spots turkeys like to strut around in the late morning. It can be a great spot to setup with a blind and decoys. Another spot on the map you want to focus on are high areas, where you can get up and listen for turkeys in the morning. Early in the morning turkeys are gobbling, and if you can get to a spot where you can hear them gobble, it can give you a good starting point. Lastly, another feature on the map that can be important is any form of water source. Turkeys need water and creeks can be great spots to key in on.

At the Ranch: How to Plan a Turkey Hunt
If you’ve never turkey hunted or are just getting into it, planning a hunt may seem intimidating. But we’re here to help! The first thing you want to think about when planning a turkey hunt is where you actually want to hunt at. Depending where you live, you may need to hunt out of state, like I do. Jumping online and doing a little research looking into certain state’s turkey populations is a great start. You want to be hunting somewhere where you have a good chance at getting a turkey. After determining a state, double check to ensure that state provides over the counter tags. If they don’t, you may need to apply early.
Once you’ve determined where you want to hunt, you’ll need to figure out actual spots to hunt within the state. Utilizing resources online such as a state’s game and fish website can help you choose different public or private land. Lastly, when it comes to planning a turkey hunt, you’ll need to ask yourself what other things you might need. Common items are decoys, a blind, etc.
If you’re a new turkey hunter, be sure to follow along with our turkey videos as we’ll be rolling out numerous videos this spring to help you along!
