Dark Storm Industries at SHOT Show: Building State-Compliant Firearms.

At SHOT Show 2026, we spent a lot of time talking about innovation

And the biggest takeaway?

We learned that some of the most meaningful innovation happens behind the scenes, when manufacturers figure out how to keep people shooting legally in some of the most restrictive states in the country.

That’s exactly where Dark Storm Industries (DSI) shines.

A Company Born From Restriction

Dark Storm Industries was founded in New York just before the SAFE Act went into effect. Instead of stepping away from the market when regulations tightened, the team leaned in.

They engineered one of the early fixed-magazine solutions to help firearm owners stay compliant while maintaining familiar AR platforms.

Today, DSI manufactures out of Rockwood, Florida, but their DNA is still rooted in solving real compliance challenges, not just for one state, but for many.

Designed for State Compliance

DSI is widely known for its state-compliant AR-style firearms, built specifically to align with laws in places like:

  • New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, where fixed-magazine rifles and pistols remain a proven solution.
  • New Jersey, with configurations featuring fixed stocks and pinned compensators.
  • Maryland, where AR-15s can be compliant with a heavy barrel and a 10-round magazine.
  • Delaware and Washington, along with states like Illinois, Virginia, and Rhode Island, that continue to evolve their regulations.

They even offer a unique platform designed to be fired with two hands that doesn’t legally fall into rifle, pistol, or “other” categories, a deliberate design choice for highly regulated states.

For shooters outside restricted states, DSI also produces full-feature AR platforms, offering the same build quality without compliance-driven limitations.

A 50-State Legal Option

One of the more interesting offerings discussed at SHOT Show was DSI’s bolt-action AR rifle and pistol.

Because many state laws focus specifically on semi-automatic firearms, this platform is legal in all 50 states, while still using a standard AR-15 lower and familiar ergonomics.

Built In-House, By Design

Dark Storm Industries controls nearly every part of its manufacturing process. Using US-sourced 7075-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum, they machine their own uppers, lowers, barrels, handguards, gas blocks, muzzle devices, charging handles, safeties, buffer tubes, and more. Only small components like springs and screws are sourced externally.

That level of control allows DSI to adapt quickly, which matters when firearm laws change faster than product cycles.

The DS-25: Lightweight Power

Another highlight was the DS-25, a small-frame .308 platform weighing under seven pounds. Available in both fixed-magazine and standard configurations, it delivers low recoil thanks to a non-traditional bolt and BCG design.

This year, DSI also introduced a 6.5 Creedmoor MFR version, expanding the lineup even further.

Why Dark Storm Industries?

With over one-third of the U.S. population living under some form of modern sporting rifle restriction, companies like Dark Storm Industries play a key role in keeping lawful ownership accessible.

They engineer around the rules, thoughtfully, legally, and with long-term use in mind.

Firearms from Dark Storm Industries are available through authorized dealers, which can be located via their dealer network. As always, buyers should confirm state and local compliance before purchasing.

Why This Matters If You’re Buying in a Restricted State?

If you’ve ever tried to figure out whether something is actually legal in your state, you already know how confusing it can get.

Talking with DSI really drives home how much peace of mind comes from buying something that was engineered for compliance from day one.

What you learn is that compliance doesn’t have to mean giving everything up.

With the right design choices, you can use fixed magazines where required, heavy barrels where needed, or alternative platforms like bolt-action ARs, all while still getting familiar ergonomics, solid performance, and a firearm you can own confidently.

And that’s really the biggest lesson from SHOT Show: smart engineering can keep you shooting, even when the rules keep changing.
