Description

Here’s an interesting rifle that changed hands more than a few times before ending up a Vietnam war trophy. I received this rifle and documentation directly from the Vietnam veteran who brought it home. Originally manufactured by J.P. Sauer during WWII for the Nazi’s this Mauser K98k was subsequently captured by the Russians, refurbished, and eventually supplied to the Viet Cong to fight the Americans. Typical of a Russian capture K98, it has all mismatched parts (the barrel and receiver match), has the “X” or “crossed rifles” struck on the left side of the receiver, and has been reblued. The laminated stock has been numbered by the Russians to the receiver number. The bolt has an electo-penciled number that does not match. All components are of WWII German manufacture and all of the original proofs and acceptance stamps are intact, not scrubbed or struck out. The metal shows handling marks and some minor rust but is in generally very good condition. The stock shows plenty of wear but is free of cracks. The mechanics are in good working order and the bore is excellent! According to the vet, he was stationed at the 93rd Evacuation Hospital in Long Binh and kept a WWII M2 Carbine for personal security. At the end of his tour he would not be able to bring the M2 home so he found an officer who had acquired the K98 and a trade was made. The K98 had been captured along the Ho Chi Minh trail and was still in cosmoline. He was able to get authorization to bring it home and the original “export document” is included with the rifle. He went on to say that he actually boarded a Delta jet with the rifle as carry on! Try that these days! A neat piece of history and a fully functional WW2/Vietnam weapon.
